A daily movie casting game
Greenlight: the movie casting game where the studio sets the rules
Every movie starts with a brief. The studio wants a horror film for $200M, at least two Oscar winners, somebody from The Dark Knight and a woman behind the camera. You can hire anyone you like, as long as the cast fits the brief.

How to play
Step 1
Read the brief
A genre, a budget and the studio’s conditions. Every brief has at least one legal cast.
Step 2
Cast eight people
Search the whole roster for each role. Only salaries are shown.
Step 3
Meet every condition
The board ticks off each condition as you cast, until the brief is met.
Step 4
Release your movie
Name it, premiere it, and see your score, your ranking and the revealed ratings.
Cast anyone, but not anyhow
Greenlight hands you the whole roster: hundreds of real actors, directors, writers, composers and cinematographers. There are no slates and no draft order. Search by name or by a film they made, filter by salary, and fill the eight roles in any order you like.
The catch is the brief. Every day the studio sets a genre, a budget and between two and six conditions, and the movie cannot be released until all of them are met. Conditions draw on real careers: Oscar winners and nominees, people born before or after a year, citizenship, people who made a film with a famous name or were part of a famous film, women behind the camera, or salary limits.
Salaries are shown, ratings are not
While you cast, you see what everyone costs but not how good they are. Salaries follow skill, so a $50M name is a safe pair of hands, but how well someone suits a horror film, or how many tickets their name sells, is down to what you know about film. Once the movie is released, critics, audiences, the box office and awards night decide the score from 0 to 100, and every rating is revealed next to your cast.
Daily brief, Classic and Hard mode
The daily brief is the same for every player, allows one release and ranks your score against everyone else’s that day. In Classic you write the brief yourself, choosing the genre, a budget of $200M, $250M, $300M or no cap, and how many conditions to meet, and you can play as often as you like. Hard mode takes away every hint: the casting list no longer says who is an Oscar winner or who was in which film, and each condition you break costs ten points.
Questions
- How is Greenlight different from Movie Draft?
- Movie Draft offers five candidates for each role and you pick one. Greenlight lets you cast anyone in the roster, so the challenge is the studio’s brief and knowing who fits it.
- Where do the conditions come from?
- Real facts from Wikidata: Oscar wins and nominations, birth years, citizenship and film credits. Salaries, ratings and every result are fictional values invented for the game.
- Can I play more than once a day?
- The daily brief allows one release. Classic lets you set your own brief and play as many times as you like, without a ranking.
- Is it free?
- Yes. It runs in the browser on a phone or a computer, with no download and no account. Greenlight is a new mode in beta, so briefs and scoring may still change.
